Sethan ran out of the room and down the Falcon corridor, Lucy on his heels. “Hang on, what about Ashara and Astaldin?” she called as they passed the entrance to her room.
He didn’t look round. “They’re both gone. He took them.”
“Why?”
“Ashara, he needs. Astaldin… for fun.”
“What? What does he need Ashara for?”
“To get the One Ring.”
They came down the Falcon’s ramp. There was no-one in sight, except for Xanden’s and Obi-Wan’s lifeless bodies sprawled nearby. Lucy couldn’t sense any life coming from them. Sethan watched as she walked over to them, in deliberate, small steps, hands clenched at her sides. Reaching them, she knelt down next to Obi-Wan, brushing some of the hair off his forehead. She closed her eyes for a second; then she asked in a forced calm voice, “Can your phoenix tears heal them?”
“No,” said Sethan, “They’re dead.” Lucy’s head fell. “But these will.”
He snapped his fingers. Lucy turned her head, and saw his hand surrounded by a strange golden glowing light.
“Nanogenes,” explained Sethan, watching the golden lights, wiggling his fingers slightly to make them dance around them, “From my ship. Millions of them. They can heal any injury – even bring people back to life...”
He looked away from them to meet Lucy’s gaze. “If I bring them back,” he said, in a hard voice, “then I want you to promise me that you’ll hear me out. You listen to what I’ve got to say, and you listen carefully.”
Lucy nodded. Sethan flicked his hand towards the two bodies, and the golden lights sped over to them. They swarmed all over Xanden and Obi-Wan, particularly gathering around the wounds on their chests, and started glowing, so brightly that Lucy couldn’t look at them. She held up a hand to shield her eyes, and glanced at Sethan, who was watching them, seemingly unaffected by the bright light.
The glow dimmed, and she looked back. The nanogenes were dissipating; the wounds on their chests were healed. Lucy couldn’t breathe as the golden light faded, leaving Obi-Wan and Xanden lying alone, unharmed.
The moment seemed to stretch on forever. Suddenly, she saw Obi-Wan stir. Lucy sprang forwards, heart leaping, and grabbed his shoulders. “Obi-Wan! Obi?”
Obi-Wan took a great gasping breath, and his eyes flew open. He looked around wildly, no recognition in his eyes. “What – what just happened?”
Lucy almost cried with relief and threw her arms around him, hugging him as tightly as she could. She heard Obi-Wan say in a slightly muffled voice, “Hey – are you all right?”
“Am I all right? Oh, you great resounding idiot…” cried Lucy, laughing.
Xanden sat up behind him, looking extremely confused. “Did I just get shot, or is this just an extremely bad hangover?”
Lucy didn’t answer, but reached out and tugged him into the hug as well, accidentally smacking both of their heads together. “Shot,” decided Xanden, “Definitely shot.”
“Lucy,” said Obi-Wan, sounding even more squashed than before, “Not that I don’t love your rib-crushing hugs, but would you mind explaining… er… why we’re alive?”
Lucy didn’t release either of them. “It was… Sethan. He used nanogenes to bring you back.”
She felt Xanden stiffen in her embrace. “Sethan?” said Obi-Wan slowly.
“He wasn’t behind this. It was Valistar. He came here and destroyed Lothlorien. He was the one who shot you. He took Ashara, Astaldin and the Rings.” She was still holding them, partly because she was scared of what they would do when she let them go, and partly because she needed to be close to them. She continued in a business-like tone, “Then Valistar invaded my mind while I was meditating. He was going to kill me. But Sethan came in and rescued me. Valistar wounded him with his lightsaber. He would have died.”
“Except he evidently didn’t,” said Xanden coldly.
“He brought you back,” said Lucy sharply, “He brought you back to life. You were dead. He wants us to hear him out. So we’re going to hear him out.”
After a long moment, Obi-Wan said quietly, "All right. All right," he repeated louder, as Xanden muttered something under his breath.
Lucy let them go, and the three of them got to their feet. They turned to face Sethan, who was still standing watching them a little way away.
"We'll listen," said Xanden.

NO! NO WAY! You're only allowed nanogenes if you PROMISE Capt. Jack H. is going to turn up!
