The Author, deciding to make her presence known, glared down at him. It’s the best I could come up with. There’s one more day before I turn this in, buster, and you’d better take what you get.
“Now, look,” Mark lectured, using his almighty education, “A story has a beginning, a rising action, a climax, a falling action, and a conclusion. I can’t say there was much of a climax… Are you trying to count those goblins?”
You should see what the High School teachers try to shove on you nowadays, the Author said dryly. You’d think this was more exciting than the Odyssey.
“So WE’RE your story?” Kate gasped.
There was a moment of silence.
“Yes, Kate,” Mark said sarcastically. “Welcome to the conversation.”
There was another pause while everyone waited for someone else to start talking.
“Soooo…” Hank said awkwardly, clearing his throat. “Now what?”
Kate shrugged. “The story’s over… I guess. I mean, we completed the Quest, didn’t we? The Author’s got her Plot now, doesn’t she?”
“That’s another thing!” Mark burst. “This story lacks a proper conclusion!”
The Author glared menacingly. What would you suggest?
Mark shifted his weight uncomfortably. “I don’t know,” he muttered to nobody in particular.
Kate perked up. “I think that the conquering heroes should go home and live happily ever after!”
“But we never had homes to begin with,” Mark pointed out. “We are, if you’ve forgotten, NOT rounded characters. We originated on page one with no background.”
Kate shrugged, ceding to his point.
“If you care to be like Shakespeare and make a fast romance, you could have Mark and Kate fall in love and ride off into the sunset,” Red suggested.
“NO.” Kate and Mark said simultaneously.
“Besides, it’s to cliché,” Hank pointed out.
They all stood in thought, pondering.
“I’VE GOT IT!” Kate cried excitedly.
“You know how end the story?” Hank asked.
“Will it actually work?” Mark sighed.
“Is it a good ending?” Red prodded.
What is it?? The Author growled.
Kate smiled broadly. “The reader stops reading!"
(Author’s Note: That’s your cue. You go away now. The story’s as over as it’s going to get.)
