which is now
Glancing around, Peggie quickly ducked into the toilets. Pulling her plastic bag of civilian clothing out of her bag (she and Erin had been planning on going into town that afternoon), she quickly changed into nice, normal stuff, and sauntered out, trying to look like a cocky 6th former.
She sneaked towards the back exit, and ran down the street, until she was out of sight from any window of her school. Pausing a moment, she tried to remember which was nearest, Erin’s house or Woodcut Lane. Deciding on the former, she tried to walk inconspicuously down the street, but gave up when she realised she looked silly, and just walked.
~~~
Yep, definitely not kidnapped, thought Peggie as she replaced the key in the shed. The door sounded like something out of a horror film, the windows were bolted from the inside and absolutely no sign of a struggle. In fact, no sign of anything really. Peggie had hoped to find something relevant, but nope, nothing whatsoever. However, if the police investigated it she was now going to be in big trouble, as her fingerprints were all over it, but Peggie tried not to think it much.
As she turned the corner, the tiny museum caught her eye. She’d never been there, or really known about it before yesterday, but she could tell it wasn’t much. It looked like a concrete building, and probably was, with tiny windows and a bleak outlook.
This door also creaked dreadfully, but the curator, and young man sitting and reading a newspaper. Peggie coughed loudly, and he jumped, blinking in surprise.
“Hello?” she asked.
“I, er, um, I mean…hello,” he stuttered.
“I’m doing a project on local painters for school,” Peggie lied briskly. “Do we have any?”
“Local painters? Certainly. Would you like to join the tour? There’s one every Saturday morning.”
Peggie looked thoughtful. “Yes…I might. But now I’d like to just look around.”
“Certainly,” he said again. “But watch out for Tibault.”
“Who?” she asked vaguely, staring hard at a small picture in the corner. She took a step forward and-
A hellish MIAOW! erupted from the shadows and launched itself at her face. Peggie screamed, and fell to the floor, clawing at the huge furry thing sitting on her face, yowling.
Suddenly it was lifted off, and the curator’s face peered worriedly down at her. “Erm…are you alright?” he asked unhelpfully, holding the flailing cat as far away from him as possible.
Peggie sat up, glaring at him and touching a stinging part of her cheek. Her fingers came away with blood at the tips. “Oh. Ouch,” he said, even more unhelpfully. “Look, you, er, you stay here, and I’ll fetch the First Aid Kit.”
She sat down on an old, comfortable, ex-plush chair, and studied the wall in front of her, wondering how the hell she’d explain a weal this long down the side of her face. Soon the curator returned, holding a large green box. He seemed to have disposed of the cat.
“Now, I have no idea where Tibault’s been today, so I’ll just see how deep it is, and clean it up.”
Peggie sat with ill-grace as he probed her face, and yelped when he dabbed it with antiseptic wipes.
Finally he’d finished, and took the box away. Peggie, after checking the time, and realised just how late she was running, and just how pissed her mother was going to be. She got up and wandered over to the painting that had caught her interest before.
