Watchmen is a graphic novel by Alan Moore - ie, one of the most fantastic comic books EVER, if not THE best. It's basically about masked heroes, and what society would REALLY be like with them around - and it's set after the golden age of heroes, when vigilantism has been banned (kind of like the Incredibles), when it seems someone is killing all of the old masked heroes.
Except that in no way sums up how AWESOME it is. Each of the heroes is a fully fleshed out character, and it so brilliantly captures the atmosphere of America in the middle of the Cold War, and there's so much symbolism and philosophy tied up in it, and, and, I can't get over how much I ADORE IT.
If you get the chance, buy it. Seriously.

Okay.
Is Alan Moore the guy who did The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
