Down a step from Katie's university queries, I have decided to come to the wise members of this here forum for advice... What do I doooooooooooooooo? The only two I am certain about are Biology and Chemistry... Atm I have German and English Lit and Critical thinking down to do...but I don't know!! I was thinking some advice from those in-the-know wouldn't go amiss... The guy I had my interview with suggested doing anther science...perhaps psychology or environmental science. I refused point blank to do physics. I hate physics. And then on Thursday I was thinking maybe I should do maths, even though I hate it, because if I want to fo a sciencey-thing at Uni then it would make me look good... Helpiiiiiiiiiie!

What's Critical Thinking?
Anyway, well done on not doing Physics. I took it and it's hell. For Maths you have have done excellently at GCSe, otherwise you will be lost at sea.

English Literature is ultimate doss. I do it and you can take your books into the exam with 'annotations' - ie all your notes - inside. Also, unlike the other two, you can just bluff your way through if you're unsure and still get a high grade, just so long as you can find a random quote to back it up.
Plus, if you just come out with random quotes from the books or random analysis, you sound really clever. ;D

And also, with the sciencey thing:
I'm doing Biological Science at Oxford University next year and I only have Biology and Chemistry as Science subjects. You do only need two. My other subjects are English Literature and Fine Art (Photography), and Oxford didn't care.

Ooooh that's good. Critical thinking...I'm actually not too sure what it is about really, it's hard to explain, but they like you to do it.

If you want to apply for a science, it may be a good idea to do Maths at least to AS, but only if you get an A* or high A at GCSE, because, like Oni said, you will just be lost. I don't do it, but even people who did get an A* at GCSE got lost, so you don't stand much of a chance with anything less than a B. It's good to have a little variation by doing at least one art subject, like English Lit, which would also be good as it proves you can write full essays.

We'll see what I get for maths then... I would hate it though... However, I have gone off the whole Eng lit thing because of the 3hr exam. The longest I've had is 2 and 1/2 and that was bad enough... Maybe I'll do english language...or art...hmm..
Does anyone do a language? I'm pondering over german. Are they v. v. hard at a-level?

*quietly* LATIN
Sorry.
All the exams are really long at A Level. In Biology, you have three hour-long modules, so it's still 3 hrs, though if the teacher's nice you get breaks in between...

And if you need excuses, you shouldn't be doing it. Don't do English, then.

Well, I think it all depends on what you want to do at uni! I do think taking an arty-er subject such as English (or music!! lol) is good, because it shows that you can cope with a wide range of subjects, and write essays and stuff, instead of just writing up experiments etc. Don't do physics unless you intend to take maths. I tried, it wasn't pretty. The whole course is maths-based! Plus, a lot of my friends do maths and I don't think I know anyone who hasn't been reduced to tears over it at least once. Or at least severe depression. A language is also a good thing as well, cos again it shows wide range etc etc etc. So my suggestions are Chem, Bio, English and German, but thats just what I think !
