I found out a little while ago that there was a book called The Boy With The Thorn in His Side. This excited me since I like the Smiths and that song is great. Then I found out it's by the jerk who writes lyrics for Fall Out Boy, a band I most certainly do not like. In the process, I found out that Mr. Emo is a Smiths fan and likes Morrissey's lyrics, so I got to wondering if Morrissey and the Smiths were (bum bum buuuum) in fact emo. I would argue that they weren't since at the darkest moments of the band, it seemed more like a joke than anything else. "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side" was more emo, but "There is a Light that Never Goes Out," which is about how it would be wonderful to share dying in a car crash with someone, seems almost funny. Indeed, I can't listen to "Sweet and Tender Hooligan" without chuckling (I don't want to ruin the joke, so you guys should just give that a listen). What does everyone else think?
