Well, from Eldest, mainly...
He's about nineteen, has shoulder-length brown hair, is on the run from the Empire, is really good with a sword and has ANGST. Not that he complains about it - he only tells Eragon about it when he has no other choice.
Basically, he's the son of the Darth Vader character of the story (who's dead), and was kept locked up with his mother by him until he was three and his father died. He was then raised by the REAL bad guy, the Emperor equivalent, and at first served him, but then realized just how evil he was and ran away. Since then, he's been fighting the Empire in his own way, and helps Eragon get to safety.
And he has a massive scar on his back from where his father threw his sword at him.
When I first read Eragon, I realized he was cool. But then, last night... I read Eldest.
SPOILERS AHEAD
At the beginning, you're made to think that Murtagh has been killed. But he hasn't. When Eragon and the rebels are fighting the Empire at the end, and they're just starting to win, another Dragon Rider appears and completely OWNS the rebels. He separates Eragon from them, and whups his ass with swordfighting and magic, even though Eragon has just spent months learning from the elves.
And suddenly Eragon recognizes the sword-fighting style, and pulls the enemy Rider's helmet off - and it's Murtagh.
MURTAGH HAS GONE OVER TO THE DARK SIDE.
When I informed Frankie and Becca of this - both of whom picture Murtagh as Gee - they died.
Turns out he was just kidnapped, and Galbatorix the Bad Guy made him swear allegiance to HIM, and gave him a dragon. They were taught how to be a Dragon Rider, and really, REALLY enjoyed it. Murtagh really enjoys the power - but still feels compassion for Eragon, who was a good friend of his, and oh btw his brother. And other bad guy was Eragon's father.
Which must have been shocking for everyone else, but I was following the Star Wars formula and guessed it halfway through book 1.
But still, let's check the list - Murtagh is:
1. Long dark haired.
2. Brilliant with a sword
3. Kicks ass with magic.
4. Has a red dragon.
5. And a red sword, now he stole Eragon's, which was 'rightfully his'.
6. Has much childhood angst.
7. Gallows humour. Did I mention that?
8. A big scar.
9. Was fighting tirelessly for good, despite the good people rejecting him for being bad guy's son.
10. And has now turned evil. OOOOH.
11. BUT STILL HAS COMPASSION. Aaaah.
*kicks out Anakin* MURTAGH IS THE NEW ULTIMATE GOOD GUY TURNED EVIL. Murtagh doesn't just glare at everything and wind up looking confused.
Oh no, he stands above his old friend Eragon with a grin, and his long dark hair slightly messed up, having just whupped his ASS, holding onto a red sword with a red dragon behind him - not to mention against a backdrop of fire and smoke and a massive battle....
*fans self*
WHY DID THEY CAST PATROCLUS AS HIM??
But also, if we're following the Star Wars formula, as we have done so so rigidly for the last two books, that means... in the next book... *cries*
